Which SSL certificate do I need for my website?
If you're here, you already know you need an SSL certificate — but faced with so many options, acronyms and price points, the real question is: which one is right for you?
In this guide we explain the differences between SSL certificate types, what each one is for, and how to choose the best fit for your website and budget.
The basics: what does an SSL certificate do?
An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between your website and its visitors. That means the information they exchange — passwords, payment details, form submissions — travels protected and cannot be intercepted.
You recognize it visually by the padlock in the browser bar and the https:// at the start of the URL. Without SSL, Google marks your site as "Not Secure" — which drives visitors away and hurts your search rankings.
But not all SSL certificates are the same. The main difference lies in the validation level: how much the certificate authority verifies about you or your business before issuing it.
The 3 types of SSL certificates
1. Domain Validation (DV) — the fastest and most affordable
A DV certificate only verifies that you control the domain. No paperwork, no phone calls. Issuance is nearly instant — your certificate is ready in minutes.
Who is it ideal for?
- Blogs and personal websites
- Portfolios and presentation sites
- Informational landing pages
- Development or staging sites
Who is it NOT enough for? If your site accepts payments, handles sensitive customer data, or is the digital face of an established business, a DV certificate may not generate enough trust.
Reference price: from $22.50 USD/year (RapidSSL, PositiveSSL)
2. Organization Validation (OV) — for companies and businesses
An OV certificate goes one step further: in addition to verifying the domain, the certificate authority verifies that your company exists legally. This can take between 1 and 3 business days.
The result is that visitors can see verified company information inside the certificate — which generates considerably more trust than a DV.
Who is it ideal for?
- Companies with a corporate web presence
- Sites with contact forms or user registration
- SaaS platforms and web applications
- Educational and government institutions
Reference price: from $54 USD/year (Comodo Elite SSL)
3. Extended Validation (EV) — the highest level of trust
An EV certificate has the most rigorous validation process. The certificate authority verifies the legal, physical and operational existence of your company. The process can take between 3 and 7 business days.
Historically EV certificates displayed a green bar with the company name in the browser. Although modern browsers no longer show that green bar, EV remains the trust standard for large organizations — and sophisticated users know how to recognize it.
Who is it ideal for?
- Online stores that process payments
- Banks, fintechs and financial services
- Businesses that handle sensitive customer data
- Any business where trust is a critical conversion factor
Reference price: from $208 USD/year (Comodo EV SSL)
What about subdomains?
If your site has multiple subdomains — like store.yourdomain.com, blog.yourdomain.com, app.yourdomain.com — buying an individual certificate for each one can get expensive and hard to manage.
For this case there is the Wildcard certificate, which with a single purchase protects your main domain and all its unlimited subdomains. It's the smartest option for agencies, developers and companies with multiple subdomains.
Reference price: from $201 USD/year (Comodo Wildcard DV)
What if I need to protect several different domains?
For that there are Multi-Domain (SAN) certificates, which let you protect several different domains with a single certificate. Ideal if you manage more than one website or have domain variants (with and without www, in different extensions).
Reference price: from $30 USD/year (PositiveSSL Multi-Domain)
Quick guide: which one is right for you?
| Site type | Recommended certificate | From |
|---|---|---|
| Blog or personal site | DV (PositiveSSL or RapidSSL) | $22.50 USD/year |
| Corporate or institutional site | OV (Comodo Elite or Sectigo) | $54 USD/year |
| Online store or ecommerce | EV (Comodo EV or DigiCert) | $208 USD/year |
| Site with multiple subdomains | Wildcard DV or OV | $201 USD/year |
| Multiple different domains | Multi-Domain (SAN) | $30 USD/year |
One final tip before you buy
The most expensive option isn't always the one you need. For most websites in Latin America, a DV certificate from a trusted brand — like PositiveSSL or RapidSSL — is more than enough and represents excellent value for money.
